Queen's South Africa Medal | ||
Obverse1. |
Reverse | Medal and clasps of silver. Naming impressed on the rim (Service Number, Rank, Initials, Surname & St John Amb: Bde:). Later, 83 SJAB men were enlisted in the RAMC and their medals have 5 integer service numbers and R.A.M.C. impressed on the rim - other details the same. There are 3 types of reverse: 1 - with raised dates 1899-1900 (none issued to SJAB); 2 - With the dates removed (sometimes ghost dates appear); 3 - With the wreath pointing to the F in Africa (Types 1 & 2 point to R. No ghost dates on type 3).
26 Clasps were authorised but only 10 were issued to SJAB, the most seen on a medal awarded to SJAB is 5. A few medals with the Belmont clasp (not awarded to UK SJAB men) have been recorded as issued to Local South Africa SJAB. Clasps were often issued after the medal had been issued and are either missing or loose on the ribbon rather than afixed to the suspender. There were colony clasps, battle clasps and date clasps (for those that did not qualify for the King's South Africa medal).
